Introduction
Medical coders and billers work together
to assure health care providers to get paid for their services.
The main shared focus area is the medical and health
care provider's business financial aspects. The health care
provider's livelihood and success depends on the coder's and
billers’ dependability and accuracy.
Program Overview
The Associate of Applied Science Degree
in Health Information Technology-Medical Coding prepares students
for careers in the ever-changing medical records profession.
Students gain more in-depth knowledge of medical coding through
intense, hands-on courses in addition to a medical coding
externship. Graduates will be prepared for employment as professional
coders in hospitals, physicians’ offices, outpatient
care centers, insurance firms and public health departments.

Abstracts clinical information from
a variety of medical records and assigns appropriate ICD 9
CM and/or CPT codes to patient records according to established
procedures. Analyzes, enters and manipulates database, confirms
appropriate DRG assignments. Knowledge in ICD-9 and CPT-4
coding required. Also requires an associate's degree and at
least 2 years experience in coding or medical records using
the International Classification of Disease and the Current
Procedural Terminology coding systems. Familiar with standard
concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish
goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision.
A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically
reports to a supervisor or manager.
Note: Upon completion
students qualified and encouraged to sit for their Certified
Professional Coders exam (CPC).
