What is HRCI?

Human Resource Certification Institute is the credentialing affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the world’s largest association for professional human resource management. HRCI defines and manages the human resources body of knowledge and provides assessments and certification. Human Resources certification displays mastery of the human resources knowledge and is recognized as a personal and professional achievement.

The Human Resource Body of Knowledge

The human resource body of knowledge is a standard set by human resources professionals. These standards are set to help define what a human resource professional should know and be able to apply in their work to be a competent human resource generalist. The HRCI body of knowledge is divided into six areas that apply to almost 80 responsibilities and more than 80 knowledge statements. The following areas are what HRCI bases the certification exam on. The percentages behind each area are the PHR and SPHR percentages that the test emphasizes respectively.

            1.  Strategic Management (12%, 29%)

            2.  Workforce Planning and Employment (26%, 17%)

            3.  Human Resource Development (17%, 17%)

            4.  Total Rewards (16%, 12%)

            5.  Employee and Labor Relations (22%, 18%)

            6.  Risk Management (7%, 7%)
